About the artist

Alexandra (Alex) Collier is a playwright qualified with an MFA Playwriting from Brooklyn College, USA.

The opportunity

Alex was offered a chance to study with Mac Wellman, the American playwright, author and poet, Obie winner and Professor of Play Writing at Brooklyn College. Under Wellman’s tutelage, Alex’s playwriting ideas radically evolved in terms of form and content and she was encouraged to create theatre that is risky, fascinating and innovative. Wellman described Alex as a “fresh, exhilarating and vital voice which should be cultivated.”

During her time in America, Alex had the opportunity to make many professional connections, mainly through the networks she was able to access at Brooklyn College, which have helped her to develop her craft and enhance her profile and employment prospects.

“The Cultural Trust grant] not only made it possible for me to study in the US but also, it conferred credibility and encouraged me as a playwright to believe that what I am doing is legitimate. That kind of help is priceless.”

Outcomes

Alex gained greater confidence through the mentorship of professors Mac Wellman and Erin Courtney and through consistent writing work. The exposure to such a high standard of theatre has, according to Alex, “made an indelible mark on my writing and taught me much about theatricality”. Her work was seen and read by theatre professionals in New York (she now has agents in both Australia and the US), including a piece which was used during a workshop at Sydney Theatre Company.

Next step

Alex was commissioned to write an off-Broadway play that was produced in June 2012 and performed at the Cherry Lane Theatre, Manhattan, and the same theatre at which Samuel Beckett’s first work was performed. As a result of being in the MFA program, Alex was accepted into the prestigious Women’s Project Theatre two-year playwriting lab and residency program for women playwrights, directors and producers. This program offered Alex further opportunities, mentorship and developed her business acumen for her life as a playwright.

Alex went on to write a musical with an Australian singer/songwriter, Greta Gertler. They were both  accepted into a residency in New York to further develop the piece. She is also working with an American director on her play Underland.

Alex’s website provides up-to-date information on her latest plays and projects.
