About the artist

Mischa was born and raised in Perth and has been acting since the age of six. She was accepted into the specialist drama school, John Curtin College of the Arts, for the last two years of her secondary education. She was awarded ‘Top of Drama’ for both years, graduating in 2003. Mischa completed her Bachelor of Arts Degree at Curtin University in 2006, majoring in Performance Studies with a minor in Film and Television.

The opportunity

Following her qualification at Curtin University, Mischa felt she needed a more intense environment in which to hone her acting skills.

Supported by the Cultural Trust, Mischa was offered the opportunity to study at the Stella Adler Studio of Acting in New York. Established in 1949 this prestigious school of acting has trained thousands of actors and became the first professional actor training school to become affiliated with NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts.

New York also presented her with an opportunity to network and create a valuable group of contacts within the US film and television industry.

Mischa gained a deeper knowledge of her craft through her 'active learning', learning about the history of New York Theatre, and reading many plays and books on theatre. Although Mischa gained a variety of skills through her experience at Stella Adler, she improved significantly in the area of accents through intensive accent classes and is now confident that she can learn any accent assigned to her. The course also taught Mischa how to poetically portray the works of Shakespeare, how to analyse a script and how to develop passion in the characters she plays. The exposure to quality, international theatre inspired her work and has fuelled her ambition to produce work of an equal quality.

The next step

The training at Stella Adler served Mischa well. She was invited to audition for The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey and also had interest from the producer of the Gossip Girl, an American teen drama series. Since her time at the acting studio, Mischa has shot four short films and was (at the time of her report) rehearsing The Office of Dead Letters which Little Y, her Perth-based theatre company will be producing as their debut production in NYC.

Mischa was offered an assistantship at Stella Adler to do a second year of study and decided to progress this. The second year entails learning about agents, managers, marketing, and the New York and American film and theatre industries, as well as a continued focus on strengthening/improving acting skills.

In December 2012 Mischa received a second IPCT grant to allow her to continue her studies.
